Feeling Frustrated as You’re Searching for a Therapist That Takes Florida Blue?
(This is not medical advice. Please see a qualified clinician. If you are in crisis, call 988 or go to your nearest ER.)
Want to hear something ironic?
I am a therapist and my personal health insurance does not cover my own counseling. I believe it is best practice for me to see a therapist quarterly (and to walk my talk, right?). My chosen LMHC does not take my insurance, so I choose to go private pay and ask for a superbill.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt or invoice written by a medical professional for patients. It outlines costs, services rendered, and insurance codes. While reimbursement is not guaranteed, in part or 100%, sometimes the patient receives some money back.
Why don’t I accept all insurance panels?
To keep my practice alive, I need to charge the appropriate rate. Insurance panels vary what they pay therapists; sadly, not all insurance companies provide a rate that keeps the lights on.
I am happy to accept United and Aetna.
Couples Counseling and Insurance
Oftentimes, couples counseling requires more than the 50 minutes that insurance will cover. Also, insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis–couples therapy does not include a diagnosis. Superbills is a chance–not a guarantee-that insurance may pay for some of the cost.
