    Why Therapy? FAQ’s

I’ve never talked to a therapist before.  I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. About 59 million people have seen therapists over the last 20+ years.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in new ways. You may learn different skills and gain a fresh perspective. The therapist listens without judgment or agenda. The conversation is confidential.  The therapist’s job is to help YOU decide what is best.

    Is Jackie a Christian counselor?

Jackie is a Christian who is a counselor. She offers a Christian perspective for clients who ask for it. Mental health counseling is unbiased and fair. Clients’ faith or lack thereof is respected in the office. Jackie’s training and integrity have prepared her to see clients of any religion or background.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective alone but it doesn’t always get to the root of the problem.  Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs. During the first appointment, you’ll answer questions about your background and brainstorm your goals for therapy. In subsequent sessions, you and the therapist will apply therapeutic strategies to meet your goals.

    How long will it take?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may take between 12 and 20 sessions (weekly counseling). Of course, everyone is different regarding the severity of their symptoms and their personal goals. Gottman Method couples counseling typically takes between eight and 20 sessions (50- or 90-minutes).

    What’s the Gottman Method?
